To get started, you’ll need a valid photo ID, such as a UK driving licence, passport, or biometric residence permit. Whether you’re accessing government services or other important portals, this app provides a seamless verification process with your phone.
Before you start:
You can use the following types of photo ID to verify your identity:
- UK photocard driving licence
- UK passport
- Non-UK passport with a biometric chip
- UK biometric residence permit (BRP)
- UK biometric residence card (BRC)
- UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)
Expired BRP, BRC, or FWP can still be used for up to 18 months after the expiry date. Additionally, you’ll need an Android phone running version 10 or higher and a well-lit area to take a clear photo.
How it works:
For a driving licence:
- Take a photo of your driving licence
- Scan your face using your phone’s camera
For a passport, BRP, BRC, or FWP:
- Take a photo of your photo ID
- Scan the biometric chip in your photo ID
- Scan your face using your phone’s camera
What happens next:
Once you’ve completed the identity check, you’ll return to the government service website to view the results of your verification. The GOV.UK ID Check app simply facilitates identity confirmation; no personal data is stored on the app or phone.
